Livraria Lello: Porto’s Literary Landmark

  • Livraria Lello sits on Rua das Carmelitas, close to Porto’s historic centre. The Lello brothers opened it in 1906, and it was built as a place where literature and architecture could share the same room.

The building was designed by Francisco Xavier Esteves. Its Neo-Gothic interior has carved wood, slender columns, and a stained-glass skylight, and the sculptural red staircase linking the two main floors has become the shop’s most photographed feature.

It’s still a working bookstore: Portuguese and international titles sit alongside special editions and art books.

Why Visit Livraria Lello

A world-famous bookshop: Livraria Lello is internationally recognised for its unique architecture and literary atmosphere, making it one of Porto’s most visited cultural landmarks.

Historic design with purpose: Every detail, from the carved wood to the stained-glass ceiling, was created to elevate the experience of discovering and buying books.

A real working bookstore: This is not a museum. You browse shelves, find titles, and purchase books in a space that has been doing exactly that since 1906.

Comfortable, timed entry: Ticketed sessions control visitor numbers, allowing you to explore, photograph, and browse without overcrowding.

A book voucher included: Your ticket includes credit toward a book, so your visit always connects back to Livraria Lello’s original mission.

When the Doors Open

  • Opening hours Livraria Lello is open every day from 9:00 am to 7:30 pm, with the last entry about 30 minutes before closing.

The bookshop is closed on January 1, Easter Sunday, May 1, June 24, and December 25.
  • Best Times to Visit Early morning (9:00 to 10:30)
The calmest moment of the day. With fewer people inside, you get more room by the staircase and time to browse the shelves without a queue forming behind you.

    Late afternoon (after 5:30 pm)
Visitor numbers drop again, making this a good option if you prefer a quieter atmosphere before closing.

    Weekdays over weekends
Monday to Thursday usually sees lighter footfall, while Fridays and weekends are the busiest, especially in spring and summer.

Right in the Heart of Porto

Address

Livraria Lello is located at Rua das Carmelitas 144, 4050-161 Porto, Portugal, a short walk from the city’s historic centre.

From here, it’s easy to combine your visit with nearby landmarks and cafés on the same walk.

Plan Your Route

Porto’s metro is quick and covers most of the city. The closest stations are Aliados and São Bento, both about a 5-minute walk from the bookshop, and several lines pass through them. If you’re coming from Vila Nova de Gaia or Boavista, the metro is usually your easiest option.

Dining and Nearby Cafés

  • Livraria Lello doesn’t have its own café, but you’re steps from some of Porto’s better options for a break. Around Clérigos, Praça dos Leões, and Rua das Carmelitas you’ll find everything from traditional Portuguese cafés to newer bakeries and bistros. Plenty of visitors build in time for a coffee or a glass of wine either side of their visit.

Accessibility Information

  • Livraria Lello is housed in a historic early-20th-century building, which means accessibility is more limited than in modern venues. The interior includes narrow passages, steps, and a staircase connecting the main floors. There is no full step-free route to all areas of the bookshop.

Visitors with reduced mobility can access the main floor, where much of the interior and book selection can still be enjoyed. Staff can help where possible, and booking a timed ticket helps avoid crowding, which makes it easier to move around.

If you have specific access needs, it’s worth planning your visit around quieter times of day, such as early morning or late afternoon.

Know Before You Go

Timed entry is required: All visits are managed through scheduled ticket slots, so booking in advance is essential. Walk-in access is not guaranteed.

Your ticket includes a book voucher: The value of your entry ticket can be used toward a book purchased inside the shop.

Arrive on time: Entry is only allowed during your selected time window. Late arrival may result in losing your slot during busy periods.

Large bags are restricted: To protect the historic interior and keep aisles clear, oversized backpacks and luggage are not allowed inside.

Photos are allowed, with limits: You can take personal photos, but tripods, professional equipment, and commercial photography are not permitted.

Expect narrow spaces: Livraria Lello is a historic building with tight passages and staircases, so comfortable shoes and light bags are recommended.
